About Program

The TCL Scripting for Physical Design Training by myTectra is designed to help VLSI and EDA engineers master the art of automating ASIC design flows using Tool Command Language (TCL). This course provides both theoretical and hands-on knowledge of TCL scripting, focusing on physical design automation, tool integration, timing analysis, placement, and routing.

Participants will learn how to create scripts for EDA tool control, flow automation, report parsing, and data analysis — key skills for improving design productivity and reducing manual effort in physical design environments like Synopsys ICC, Cadence Innovus, and Mentor Graphics tools.

  • Basic understanding of VLSI Design Flow and Physical Design concepts
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux operating system and shell commands
  • Basic programming or scripting experience (Perl/Python optional)
  • Knowledge of EDA tools (Synopsys, Cadence, or Mentor) is an advantage

Upon completion of the TCL Scripting for Physical Design Training, participants will be able to:

  • Working with associative arrays
  • String manipulations and pattern matching
  • Regular expressions in TCL
  • Error handling and debugging TCL scripts
  • Using packages and namespaces
  • Best practices for scalable TCL scripting
  • Lab: Creating modular TCL scripts

Module 3: UNIX Integration with TCL

  • Running TCL scripts in UNIX/Linux
  • System calls and environment variable handling
  • Using TCL to automate file operations in UNIX
  • TCL and Shell scripting integration
  • Lab: Automating UNIX tool execution using TCL

Module 4: TCL for EDA and Physical Design

  • Role of TCL in ASIC Physical Design Flow
  • Automating PnR (Place and Route) processes
  • Scripting in Synopsys ICC / Cadence Innovus / Mentor Graphics tools
  • Tool-specific TCL commands overview
  • Automating design flow setup, placement, clock tree, and routing

Module 5: TCL Data Handling for Physical Design

  • Working with report and log files
  • Parsing and extracting timing, area, and power data

  • Automating constraint generation (SDC files)
  • Lab: TCL script for timing report extraction and summary

Module 6: Building Custom Tool Flows

  • Developing reusable TCL procedures
